Introducing our exquisite spalted poplar charcuterie boards. They are true masterpieces that combine the natural beauty of poplar wood with the captivating patterns created by spalting. Poplarboards are generally light brown to creamy yellow heartwood with green or brown streaks running through the heartwood of the board. The sapwood is only slightly paler in color and often has no substantial differentiation from the heartwood. In addition, the wood is straight grained and uniform in texture. It has a medium density. These characteristics lead to poplar being one of the leaders in utility hardwoods.
Spalted wood is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Certain types of fungus can change the colour of the wood permanently by producing extra-cellular pigments inside the wood, whereas others cause white rot or zone lines or dark dotting straggled lines and streaks of red, brown and black. The fungi spores that cause spalting love to inhabit the heartwood and sapwood of light-colored, nontoxic trees especially, such as Sycamore, Maple and Beech. Spalting is the visible aftermath of fungi wars. Once the fungi have exhausted themselves, they leave battle scars of lines and shades of color from yellows to purples blues and reds. These add interest and beauty to the natural blandness of the timber.
